An autumn afternoon on Deep Creek Lake.
One of the little signs that fall has settled in at Deep Creek is seeing the docks come out. The lake gets quieter, and a last boat ride can be one of the loveliest of the season.
It’s also the time to pay closer attention to the water. Brookfield posts the current lake level, but that lakewide reading won’t tell you the exact depth at your dock or along your route. Before heading out, take a look at your cove and make a plan with your marina or dock crew for bringing the boat in.
For dock owners, the date to know is December 1. Maryland’s Deep Creek Lake regulation requires docks, boating and swimming structures, and mooring buoys to be out of the lake from December 1 through April 1. The Lake Manager may allow installation as early as March 15 in the spring. This is a dock removal rule, not a blanket December 1 deadline for every boat.
If you plan to use the State Park launch to pull your boat, it’s open around the clock weather permitting. You can check the park information or call 301-387-5563 to confirm conditions before you go.
A little planning leaves more room to enjoy that final, quiet ride.
